The plant

What it is

Musa is the banana genus: giant herbaceous perennials whose trunk is a pseudostem of tightly rolled leaf bases. Ornamental bananas bring large, paddle-shaped tropical leaves to patios, conservatories and interiorscapes, and the hardiest kinds to gardens in milder climates.

Tissue culture is the standard way bananas are multiplied: it gives large numbers of uniform young plants from cleaned, checked starting material.
