What it is
Tradescantia spathacea, long sold as Rhoeo, is an evergreen perennial from Mexico and Central America. It forms rosettes of stiff, sword-shaped leaves, dark green above and purple beneath, with small white flowers held in boat-shaped bracts: the source of its common names, boat lily and Moses-in-the-cradle.
It is grown as a house and interiorscape plant, and as ground cover and edging in frost-free gardens.
