What it is
Nandina domestica, heavenly or sacred bamboo, is an evergreen shrub from China and Japan. It is not a bamboo: it belongs to the barberry family, and takes the name from its upright, cane-like stems.
It is grown for its fine, layered foliage, which in many cultivars colours red to bronze in cool weather. Compact cultivars such as 'Fire Power' are used for low hedges, borders, mass planting and containers.
